The South Main Association is having their monthly meeting on Tuesday, November 12th. It will be held at The Blues Foundation, at 421 South Main Street.
The featured speaker is Mei-Ann Chen. An innovative and passionate force both on and off the conductor’s podium, Mei-Ann Chen is one of America’s most dynamic young conductors. Music Director of the Memphis Symphony since 2010 and of the Chicago Sinfonietta since 2011, she has infused both orchestras with energy, enthusiasm and high-level music-making, galvanizing their audiences and communities alike.
I have seen Mei-Ann in concert and she is amazing to say the least. I cannot wait to hear her speak.
Additionally, the South Main Association meetings are a great place to meet professionals who live downtown. In fact, in 2006, I found a job during a SMA meeting! The lesson is: always bring your business cards.
The event begins with networking at 6:00 PM. At 6:30 PM, the speaker and program will begin. The cost is $10 for guests. There will be complimentary appetizers and a cash bar.

The Downtown Neighborhood Association (DNA) is hosting their annual food drive for the Mid-South Food Bank on Tuesday, November 19th.
The event will be held at 514 South Main Street at 6 PM. Bring a cash donation, or canned goods.
This event would be great for those interested in working downtown, or getting more involved in the downtown community. There are many important community leaders who are a part of this organization, and this intimate gathering would be a great place to meet them.

For those who love wine, there is a wine event coming up next week. Joy to the Wine is just $35 and benefits Porter-Leath. It will be held on Wednesday, November 13th from 5:30 – 7:30 PM at the Botanic Garden.
Despite this event being somewhat social in nature, it’s still a great opportunity to get out and meet new professionals. Additionally, tickets to many fundraisers are more than $100, so at $35, this one is a great deal.
If you are not familiar with Porter-Leath, here’s a little more information about what they do:
For over 160 years, Porter-Leath has been the primary resource for Memphis’ at-risk children and families. By focusing on the essential building blocks of healthy development, we not only give them access to the tools they need, but also a sense of hope. The result is Porter-Leath helps build stronger children, stronger families and a stronger Memphis.
It will be fun networking for a great cause. To learn more, visit their website here.

In Memphis, networking can come in many forms. I’m trying to post a variety of events, so you can pick the ones that match to your personal and career interests. On Friday, Broad Avenue is hosting their Fall Art Walk.
There will be five blocks full of music, dance, and art exhibits by over 40 local artists. The event is this Friday, November 8th from 5-10 PM and best of all, its free.
This will be a great opportunity to learn more about the art scene in Memphis, and make new friends.

The New Memphis Institute puts on an awesome program about the history of Memphis that you should check out if you haven’t.
