CCP76: Barry O’Neill, Memphis Fire Department

Episode 76 of the Copeland Coaching Podcast is now live! This week, we talk with Barry O’Neill in Memphis, TN.

Barry is a Lieutenant for the Memphis Fire Department. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Administration, and is a Paramedic. Barry has served both as a paid and volunteer firefighter and emergency services professional for over 25 years. He’s also currently attending the Executive Fire Officer Program with the National Fire Academy. In fact, he’s a third generation firefighter!

On today’s podcast, Barry shares the inside scoop on how to become a firefighter, the differences in paid and volunteer firefighters, and about a study he’s conducting on sleep’s impact on performance. He also reminds us to check the batteries in our smoke detector when we change our clocks — and he answers listener questions.

Often, we you start a business, it’s because you have expertise in a particular area. I reflect on the experience of small business owners who are doctors, dentists, or lawyers. They open the business to help people with one particular area, but there are many other tasks around setting up and running a business that you don’t have experience in. Unlike a corporate job where you have teams of people who are also experts and are available at a moments notice, you have to figure out how to get things done. One your own.

I have been incredibly lucky that each and every time I’ve needed help, someone has stepped up. On more than one occasion, someone has volunteered to help out from the goodness of their hearts.

I’m excited to say that in the last two years, we’ve accomplished a lot together, including–

ESPN Announces Layoff

My latest Memphis Daily News column is out, “ESPN Announces Layoff

With the NBA basketball season just starting up, ESPN has made an announcement that may seem quite shocking. They are planning to lay off 300 employees, or 4 percent of their 8,000-person workforce. Given that ESPN is a worldwide authority in sports, this news seems a bit jarring at first.

But, when you dig into the details, ESPN’s story is one familiar to many media outlets. Their once reliable revenue stream coming from cable and satellite subscribers is losing momentum. Rather than grow, their number of subscribers is down 5.3 percent in the past two years.

As an employee working at one of these big companies, it can feel like you’re helpless to not be left behind when these changes occur.
