My latest Memphis Daily News column is out, “ESPN Announces Layoff”
With the NBA basketball season just starting up, ESPN has made an announcement that may seem quite shocking. They are planning to lay off 300 employees, or 4 percent of their 8,000-person workforce. Given that ESPN is a worldwide authority in sports, this news seems a bit jarring at first.
But, when you dig into the details, ESPN’s story is one familiar to many media outlets. Their once reliable revenue stream coming from cable and satellite subscribers is losing momentum. Rather than grow, their number of subscribers is down 5.3 percent in the past two years.
As an employee working at one of these big companies, it can feel like you’re helpless to not be left behind when these changes occur.

The importance of being on time is often underestimated in business. It is one of the easiest ways to build credibility and conversely, one of the fastest ways to lose it. Whether you are just starting your career or are a seasoned professional, this is an important point for everyone.
Have you ever had a one-on-one meeting with your boss where the boss showed up late, really late? As the employee, what message does this give you? It can often leave you feeling like a lower priority. It appears the boss has much more important things to do. You may feel underappreciated and demotivated.

My latest Memphis Daily News column is out, “What Hiring Managers Wish You Knew”
Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with a group of hiring managers at a conference hosted by the Society for Information Management. It’s an organization that encourages networking and education for technology leaders.
But the group I spoke with wasn’t just any group of hiring managers. They’re frustrated. Hiring can be a hard business to be in, and they’re struggling to recruit the best, most talented employees.
I shared an insider’s point of view on hiring, based on trends I’ve noticed in my coaching. In particular, I shared what it is that gets under the skin of job seekers.

My latest Memphis Daily News column is out, “Good, Fast and Cheap.”
If you’ve ever worked for a large corporation, you’re probably familiar with the phrase, “You can only pick two: good, fast or cheap.”
The idea is that you can create a new product that’s good in a short timeframe if you’re willing to pay enough. Or, you can create a product that’s good and cheap, but it’s going to take some time. Or, you can make a product that’s fast and cheap, but it’s not going to be very good.
Expecting to produce a product that’s good, fast and cheap just isn’t realistic. The same principle applies to job searching.

My latest Memphis Daily News column is out, “Cohen Raises Questions About Fairness of Hiring Practices.”
The last time you applied for a job, you probably assumed your application and resume were the only things your future employer used to make a decision about whether or not to hire you.
Tennessee Rep. Steve Cohen and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren have been working on a project that may change your mind on this idea.
Together, they co-authored an op-ed piece in Time describing why “It’s time to stop employer credit checks.” They’ve also introduced an “Equal Employment for All Act” in the U.S. House of Representatives.
You probably never realized it, but many employers are pulling your credit score before they hire you. If your score doesn’t match up to what they’re looking for, you might just miss out on your next big opportunity.

My latest Memphis Daily News column is out, “Double-Spacers, You’re Dating Yourself.”
There’s something you may be doing every day that’s making you look old. And you probably have no idea what it is. It’s not your clothes, your hairstyle or the AOL email address you’re using (although those aren’t helping either).
What you’re doing is subtle, and worst of all, it’s what you were taught in school. How could someone teach you to do something incorrectly? Times have changed, possibly without you.
Before I get on a high horse, let me share – I learned this lesson the hard way. I want to keep you from learning it the hard way too. Because it’s possible nobody else will point it out to you. They’ll just talk about you when you’re not around or wonder to themselves about your intelligence.
This sounds like a big deal, doesn’t it?
