Office Gift Giving

My latest Memphis Daily News column is out, “Office Gift Giving.”

It’s that time of year again. The time of year that you’re required to attend an awkward holiday party with your coworkers during the day. I’ve gotten the sense that most people mainly are looking forward to receiving any sort of holiday bonus, and leaving work early for the day.

If you find yourself in this situation, there’s a reasonable chance you’re going to be asked to give a Secret Santa gift. If you’ve never played it, you are randomly assigned a person to get a gift for. Many offices end up transforming the game into Dirty Santa. This involves putting all the wrapped gifts on one table. Then, participants take turns opening and then stealing gifts from one another.

Typically, everyone is given a budget between five dollars and twenty five dollars per gift. Finding the right thing can be tricky for even the most seasoned gift giver.

Navigating Holiday Parties

My latest Memphis Daily News column is out, “Navigating Holiday Parties.”

Office holiday parties can often feel like a drag. There’s frequently an expectation that you must attend and bring your spouse. In addition to the stress of taking time out of your personal life for a work event, you must find childcare, pick out the perfect holiday attire and convince your spouse that this evening is important.

When you arrive at the party, there are a number of things to keep in mind. For example, you may want to start drinking right away. It’s an open bar and wine will surely make the uncomfortable evening ahead move faster. Although a little fun at your holiday party is good, it’s important to do it in moderation. The last thing you want is leave a negative impression that follows you through your career.

Grit to Great

My latest Memphis Daily News column is out, “Grit to Great”

The Memphis Grizzlies have made “Grit and Grind” a common phrase heard today in basketball. The concept of grit, however, extends far beyond the court. In applies in business, life and many other areas.

Grit is defined as “mental toughness and courage.” I recently had the opportunity to interview Linda Kaplan Thaler, the chairman of advertising firm Publicis New York. She is responsible for some of America’s most famous advertising campaigns in the industry, including the Aflac duck, and the daring “Yes, Yes, Yes” campaign for Herbal Essences.

Getting Ahead This Holiday Season

My latest Memphis Daily News column is out, “Getting Ahead This Holiday Season”

The holiday season is a fantastic time to reconnect with friends and loved ones. But, the importance of thanking those around you at work should not be overlooked at Thanksgiving or through the rest of the year.

When you’re searching for a new job, success is rarely achieved based on your merit alone. As we all know, applying online rarely gets you anywhere – no matter how smart you may be. Interviews are typically lined up through networking connections.

Getting Ahead this Holiday Season

My latest Memphis Daily News column is out, “Getting Ahead This Holiday Season”

One of the biggest misconceptions about the holidays is that your career can take a back seat until January. Don’t get me wrong. Family festivities and reconnecting with close friends is important. But putting your career on the back burner for two months is a big mistake.

Often, if a job seeker hasn’t looked for a job in some time, they tend to underestimate how long it will take to find a new job. The same holds true if they are at a more senior level or make more money now than they were the last time they looked.

The higher you go in your career, the fewer positions are available and the longer the process takes.

Careers for Veterans

My latest Memphis Daily News column is out, “Careers for Veterans

Veterans Day is the official holiday honoring our U.S. Armed Forces, I feel thankful to live in a country where so many men and women voluntarily serve and put themselves in harm’s way for the better good of everyone.

But life after the military isn’t always easy. Never before have I felt more aware of the challenges veterans face after their years of dedicated service. Working with and interviewing veterans has truly broadened my perspective.

The process of leaving the service and finding full-time employment in the civilian world is a jarring experience at best.
